Overview
Since the mid-1980s, when it came out as a cheap and happy 234cc twin, the Honda Rebel has been the standard for first-time cruiser riders.
In 2017, Honda made the little cruiser into the modern Rebel 300 we see today. They added a modern four-bulb LED headlight, a now-iconic peanut tank, and a solo saddle, giving the bike the look of a larger cruiser in a small-displacement package.
Most importantly, this bike has a low seat height and a 286cc engine that makes even the most nervous new riders feel comfortable. And that’s how they get you. Once a Rebel rider is hooked, Honda cleverly gets them to try the Rebel 500 and Rebel 1100 so they can get more of what they already like.
Exterior And Design
It has a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled 286cc engine that runs smoothly and reliably. It also has a six-speed transmission with a light clutch that makes shifting gears easy. The LED lights will come in handy when you’re still riding after dark thanks to the bike’s great gas mileage and 3-gallon fuel tank.
The soft seat on the Rebel is only 690 mm (27.2 in) high, which makes it easy for most riders to stop with both feet flat on the ground. Honda’s high quality means that riders of all sizes can feel comfortable in the saddle, no matter what size they are.

Updates for 2023
For the 2023 model year, there are no major changes to the Rebel. Even the color choices haven’t changed. The bike is still available in Pearl Blue and Matte Gray Metallic.
Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 286cc single-cylinder engine in a Honda is easy to use and fun. It revs quickly and is fun to push to its limits. It is also very forgiving because it doesn’t threaten to stall when an inexperienced rider shifts into too high of a gear. This is great for beginners who are still learning how the powerband works.
Thanks to a well-made assist and slipper clutch, pulling on the clutch is easy, and your hands won’t get tired. The Rebel’s six-speed transmission changes gears smoothly and doesn’t get stuck in false neutrals, so shifting is easy.
With 25 horsepower, the engine can get the bike up to freeway speed quickly and keep it there for a long time. The Rebel can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.85 seconds, which means riders can even beat some cars at a stoplight.
Handling
The Rebel has a low center of gravity, which makes it easy to handle both tight city streets and the occasional trip into the hills. Its chassis is also very well put together.
When making tight turns, the 41mm telescopic fork and dual shocks give decently sporty feedback. Small bump compliance is good for smoothing out small flaws in the road, but Cycle World found that larger bumps will cause the rear shocks to bottom out. This is still a bike for slow, easy rides that are good for people who are just getting started with riding.
Brakes
Front and back, single 296mm and 240mm discs are held in place by hydraulic calipers made by Nissin. Cycle World tested the brakes on the 2021 model and found that it could stop from 30 to 0 mph in 35.27 feet and from 60 to 0 mph in 141.3 feet, which was better than the competition.
More specifically, the Rebel took 17.48 feet, or the length of an average SUV, less time to stop from 60 mph to 0 mph than the Royal Enfield Meteor 350. With less distance to stop, riders have more time to react when traffic stops suddenly, which is especially helpful for new riders.
And a squeeze of the lever or a press of the pedal gives great brake feedback, so riders can know what’s going on and apply pressure as needed.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The low seat height of the Rebel platform is well-known. With a height of only 27.3 inches from the ground, the seat is very low and easy for riders of all heights to sit on.
This is great for shorter riders who might feel scared by the size of a bike. People with legs longer than 31 inches will have a little less leg room, but they will still be able to reach the bars with ease.

Electronics
The electronics on this bike are pretty simple. A circular LCD gauge shows information in a way that is easy to read, and all-LED lighting gives off clear, bright light that makes it easy to see.
