We think the best Expedition to get is the Limited trim level with a regular wheelbase. It comes with a nice mix of standard features, like leather seats, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, and power-operated running boards. It also has an interesting performance option that should make the big rig easier to drive. It doesn’t have a naturally aspirated V-8 engine like its big competitors from GM and Stellantis, like the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Jeep Wagoneer. Instead, the Expedition is powered by Ford’s well-known twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which in the most powerful model can make up to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.

The 2023 ford Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with twin turbochargers and a 10-speed automatic transmission that works well with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The standard engine has 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but the Limited models have 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet.

At our test track, the Timberline model went from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, beating the V-8-powered Tahoe Z71 by a huge 2.4 seconds. The Stealth Performance model cut the Timberline’s time by 0.2 second. All Expeditions have a rear suspension that works on its own.
The soft ride is nice for passengers, but the driver has a hard time controlling it and steering it precisely. The Expedition can pull up to 9300 pounds, but the Expedition Max, which is longer, can only pull up to 9000 pounds.
Levels of Luxury Trim
The Limited and Limited Max models have so many nice features that they could be the highest trim level. The interior has a Panoramic Vista roof, seats with luxurious leather upholstery, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
A King Ranch or a bigger King Ranch Max is easy to spot because it has stone grey trim and 22-inch wheels. Power-deployable running boards are one of the new exterior features. The cabins are made of soft leather and have captain’s chairs in the second row that fold up automatically.
There is a 15.5-inch touch screen and a B&O sound system with 22 speakers. The camera in the back is now a 360-degree system. You can see everything around the SUV with SurroundView.
The most luxurious cruise ships are the Platinum and Platinum Max models. Ford saves the best leather upholstery for this top trim and pairs it with leather and wood accents inside the car. Noise cancellation is added to make the cabin as quiet as possible.
The front seats have something called “MultiContour” that massages and cools you down. ActiveMotion’s massage action helps keep the driver and passenger from getting lower back pain and tired legs, which are common problems on long drives.

Behind the third row, Expedition Max models say there is 34.3 to 36 cubic feet of space. Because the wheelbase is so long, that number goes up to 79.6 or 121.5 cubic feet.
The Expedition Max can pull 9,000 pounds, the standard 4×4 can pull 9,200 pounds, and the Expedition can pull 9,300 pounds (standard rear-wheel drive). A class IV trailer hitch receiver comes standard, and a heavy-duty trailer tow package adds an integrated trailer brake controller.
Ford is still one of only a few car companies that has a blind spot monitor that works with trailers. This makes it safer to pull a caravan for a long time. With Pro Trailer Backup Assist, you can use a special steering knob to move the trailer into a parking spot.
Performance Options
Big trucks like the 2023 Ford Expedition and Expedition Max need a lot of power. Lucky for them, they have it. The base engine is a V6 that is turbocharged. It has a power output of 375 hp and a torque output of 470 lb-ft.
For the Platinum models, a twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque is added. It has a continuously controlled damping suspension that makes it the most luxurious way to ride.
With the Timberline or the Stealth Performance package, drivers can enjoy a high-output twin-turbo V6 engine that makes 440 horsepower. Torque is rated at 510 lb-ft, which is a lot.
Timberline and the ability to go off-road
All models of the Expedition say that they have a high ground clearance of 9.7 or 9.8 inches. 4×4 models say that they can go even further off the road.
All 4×4 models that have Intelligent 4WD can handle different terrains. This system has a setting called “grass-gravel-snow,” which is a loose setting for the terrain. It has a sand setting for places with little grip. There’s a mode called “Mud-Ruts” for uneven ground.

If you want more off-roading equipment but aren’t interest in the Timberline, the FX4 Off-road package is the way to go. It has the same tyres, suspension, and protection for the outside. A surround-view camera and an electronic limit-slip differential are also extras on the FX4.
Price of petrol and MPG in the Real World
This class of big trucks doesn’t do anything to protect fossil fuels. Ford says that its EcoBoost technology, which replaces a big naturally aspirated V-8 with a smaller twin-turbocharged V-6, is more efficient. But the Expedition doesn’t live up to what it says it will do.
The EPA hasn’t release its ratings for the 2023 model year yet, but we expect them to stay the same since none of the truck’s hardware has change. For reference, the rear-driver is rated at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway; the all-wheel-drive version drops to 16 mpg city. On our 75 mph fuel-economy route, both the Expedition and the Expedition Max got 20 mpg. This is part of our extensive testing process.
